Stripe enlisted Future Colossal to bring their Black Friday transaction data to life—literally. Our challenge? Create a one-of-a-kind analog machine to visualize 16 data streams in real time and livestream it in 4K for four consecutive days with 100% uptime. The result was a fusion of retro-inspired design and modern data storytelling.

We built a machine that blended classic computing aesthetics with analytics, creating a physical dashboard of Stripe’s Black Friday metrics. Every module was carefully designed to feel like it came straight out of the golden age of computing while delivering live transaction insights at massive scale.
One of the most captivating elements of the experience was the real-time animated transaction map. A faux-CRT screen displayed Stripe’s live Black Friday data, highlighting the biggest spending surges in cities across the world. City names, coordinates, and transaction volumes pulsed across the display, giving viewers an instant visualization of global commerce in action.
- Custom-built seven-segment displays showing real-time numerical data.
- A HUB75 LED panel array displaying dynamic animations and live text updates.
- A servo-controlled gauge visualizing changing transaction trends.
- A global transaction map, pinpointing peak activity in major cities.
- A dot-matrix printer, continuously spooling out transactions like an old-school ticker tape.
- To tie it all together, a computer interfaced with Stripe’s live API, distributing real-time metrics across all devices through serial communications. Microcontrollers translated this data, animating the entire machine in sync with global transaction activity.
The installation streamed live throughout Black Friday weekend, generating immense engagement. The response was so strong that merch inspired by the machine sold out.
Our real-time data visualization machine turned staggering financial data into a dynamic, immersive experience, showcasing the true scale of global commerce over Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
- $31 billion in transactions across 465 million purchases came to life in real-time.
- The world’s top-selling cities—New York, London, and Los Angeles—drove significant sales volume.
- A 4.3% rise in average wallet spend and an increase in crypto transactions across 36 markets revealed key shopping trends.
- Cross-border commerce hit $3.2 billion, emphasizing Stripe’s role in global trade.
- Despite peak transaction speeds reaching 137,000 per minute, Stripe maintained an industry-leading 99.9999% uptime.
